“ Definitely recommend. Very generous meal and the steak was cooked perfectly. So nice to eat somewhere that isnt a chain and has a bit of personality. Great service and hospitality. ”
“ We visited the Lantern restaurant on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago and had a fantastic meal and wonderful experience. We loved the original decor the Lantern boasts and we found out that it has been in the same family for nearly 60 years! The way in which guests are welcomed and the pride and care taken in the food served, you can really tell its a familyrun establishment. For our meal, we opted to start with the calamari and garlic mushrooms. Both of these were delicious, but we loved the mushrooms so much we had to order another portion! We then had a Porterhouse steak each, which were cooked to perfection. Alongside these we ordered the fries, onion rings and pepper sauce, which for us, were the ideal accompaniments. After these first two courses we were too full to try any of the desserts, but we imagine the options are just as tasty as everything else on the menu. Despite it being a very busy night, we couldnt fault the service we received. The servers were very attentive and ensured we were well looked after all evening they really made us feel at home. We cant recommend the Lantern enough. Everyone should experience this hidden gem at least once. Well certainly be back when were next in the area! ”
“ Absolutely gorgeous restaurant run by the family which is just lovely to see all the history in the restaurant, food and service is also top notch we cant wait to go back xx ”
“ Food absolutely fantastic. Taste was amazing. Best meal Ive ever had. The garlic mushrooms was out of this world. I hate mushrooms but this was amazing. The steak all I can say WOW . Presentation was great, very good portions. Staff so lovely and welcoming. Couldnt do enough for you. Above and beyond. Highly recommend. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Atmosphere was so nice. Most definitely be going again ”
“ We had garlic mushrooms to start and grilled sirloin steak fries and scampi provencale fies plus a Greek salad. The food was excellent the garlic mushrooms to die for! and the customer service was impeccable, very personal and friendly. We would have had a dessert, there is a great selection, but we were too full... I highly recommend this lovely, family run restaurant in Whitefriargate, Hull. If you like great food and friendly service, this is the place to go!! ”
“ I am really reluctant to write this review as this restaurant is a hidden gem. It was recommended to us by friends and when I called to book there was limited time slots available, I definitely recommend booking early to get a table. When we arrived we were a little concerned that we were in the right place, as there way in isnt well signposted but you cant get really lost. Walking into The Lantern really is like stepping into the past, we were seated in the bar area and someone took our drinks order and we were given a menu to peruse before our drinks arrived and we were asked if we were ready to order. We were left to enjoy our drinks in the bar area whilst our order was prepared. All around this seating area are photos of Whitefriargate throughout the years which is really interesting, especially seeing the old shops and what it was like before it became pedestrianised. When our food was ready we were shown to our table. We ordered a garlic bread starter to share and for our main course we ordered a sirloin steak and a porterhouse steak with fries, onion rings and cauliflower cheese as sides. We also ordered the garlic mushroom starter to come with our main course. The food was some of the most delicious food that I have eaten in a very long time. The steaks were cooked to perfection and melted in our mouths. The garlic mushrooms were the best I have ever tasted, all of the food was amazing. We were given the tip of sharing the sides because they are quite big portions and I am glad we did share because we couldnt eat dessert. These photos dont do the food the justice it deserves. The service at The Lantern was fabulous, the staff are so friendly, kind, patient and helpful. They really made the evening for us. My only criticism of The Lantern would be that we were cold . Our booking was for 6.30pm and I can imagine that as there is more people in the restaurant it will warm up, but take a jumper just in case. It certainly wont put us off coming again. ”
“ Lovely family run restaurant. Quite as it was a Tuesday. But we felt well looked after. The food is amazing. Very fresh and tasty. ”
“ What a lovely little place this is. It was like stepping back in time or going to a little taverna in Greece. Very old style, proper family run restaurant with fantastic customer service. On arrival we were greeted and asked if wed like our coats hanging up. We ordered our drinks and were seated in a comfortable sofa in the bar where we looked through the menu and ordered our food. My husband opted for the fillet steak, chips and onion rings, garlic sauce and I ordered the fillet steak strogganoff with rice. We were then seated at our table. The food was absolutely perfect, the steak was cooked exactly to my husbands liking, the garlic sauce was delicious. My strogganoff was the best Ive had in a long time. The staff were very attentive and we felt very at home here. We will definitely be returning, and recommend this lovely little place. ”
